Knitting update
May. 19th, 2025 12:00 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So, after an absolute knitting marathon over the past couple of weeks, I managed to finish my blanket just in time to submit it to the county fair a couple of hours ahead of the drop-off deadline. I'm not sure I ever want to put this much effort into a knitting project ever again, at least not on a deadline, but I admit I'm very happy with how it came out.

Main Points: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Torchwood crossover
Summary: This is another ancient work along the same lines as initiative meetings, Time After, and Torchwood: Aftershock. It's been sitting in a document probably just as long as those, though I copied and pasted it into my prompt document a while ago.
Word Count: 1018
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Spike/Xander

The Painted (2024)
May. 18th, 2025 10:10 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Was in the mood to watch a movie, so I chose one I'd never heard of before that was on Prime and went in entire blind (save for the summary).
The Painted (2024) promised haunted paintings, and you know what? I enjoyed it. I really liked it by the end despite some flaws, but I'm considering it a win all the same.
I'm not in the mood to do a full review, so here's some bullet points, starting with the stuff I didn't like so I can gush about the good stuff later. There are spoilers, but I'll try to keep them vague. Nothing in this film strikes me as something a spoiler would ruin, so there's that, too. Lol.
Let's go.
The Less Great Stuff

Let's go.
The Less Great Stuff
- Plot's a mess. The idea, the concepts, and all that is great, but the way the information is presented could have been better.
- Info dumping. This movie has a lot of blatant moments where Evelyn (the lead) or a random expert just dumps information, and while I can sort of see why that ends up happening, it's still a shame based on everything else going on.
- The Effects. I'm torn on the effects. I think that the CGI looks really good, because they sort of go for a more intentional fake looking effect? The painting effects in particular look really good, and are definitely uncomfortable in a Trypophobia way with the textures, but it gets really repetitive. The paint sequences can sometimes overstay their welcome a handful of seconds (that could have been better spent giving more room for less info dumping).
- This film likes topless women. Lol. You should take a shot every time you see a set of nude breasts whether in naughty mags or the paintings. I feel a pinch prudish pointing this out, but it started to feel a little gratuitous after a while.
- A few scares are cheesy. I don't mind this so much, but a couple of them definitely missed--noticeable when so many are great.
- Adam. I started this moving going "Did they go out of their way to make this man unlikeable?" but he had actual character development and I was getting teary eyed over him by the end. Great freaking job, movie.
- The casting. I liked everyone in the film. The whole family feels real and you can tell that they all love each other under the bickering and stress. Even Adam at his worst in the earlier parts of the film clearly loved and would do anything for his kids, so you know what? Good stuff.
- I like the twist on the Haunted House genre. This family spends a couple nights in the house and when the hauntings start...they leave. LOL. They get their asses out of that house and the plot follows them home. I love that.
- A lot of the painting moments are genuinely well framed and creepy. Some stand outs are a few subtle movements and the hair cutting sequences. The movie presents some of the scares very matter of fact. The paintings just...move. On screen. No sound effects. They're just alive and it's bright and in the daytime.
- Adam researching. I kid you not one of the best moments in the entire film is when Adam goes "I'll take care of this" in a threatening voice that implies violence and then he goes to the library to research and I cackled at that twist. It played up the horror trope of researching demonology in the middle of the film, but gave it to the absolute last person you'd expect.
- The contrast of the painting ceremony in the beginning of the film in the rich mansion with items clearly tailored for it and the rushed ceremony at the end in the poorer family home, with everything cobbled together with what they had. A table of mismatched candles in their kitchen with tearing wallpaper was so. Freaking. Good.
- I love the ending of this film. I don't care what anyone else says. I think it had just the right amount of action, tension, anxiety, and feelings.
- The cinematography and framing are all well done. It's a good looking movie.

Short version: I liked it!
( longer version )
So yeah, that was great fun and I can't wait to see more.
Since we got the Apple TV for this, I decided to take advantage and also start watching Severance. Just to demonstrate how out of touch I am with popular culture, up until about three weeks ago I hadn't realized that it was science fiction. I thought it was a mundane workplace drama, which explains why I haven't tried to watch it until now. Oops. Anyway, it's weird and dystopian and extremely well acted, and I've already finished season 1.

I was very amused by the Austrian TV commentator's reaction to Austria's Eurovision win: "Really? After eleven years, again already? Is that even possible if you're not Sweden?"
Also amused by the immediate reactions of "very cool, but so expensive, can we even afford that?" because of the recently (immediately after the national election, by complete coincidence of course) revealed giant budget deficit. At least last time afterwards it was calculated that Eurovision was a net win for the economy as a whole and also the city (but not for the network.) Fingers crossed it'll be in Vienna again, this time I'd love to maybe actually go.
I was too sick for the semifinal watch parties this week, unfortunately, and I only caught most of the finale. Not one of the best years imo but still fun. I wish they'd reduce the flashing lights. I was happy to find out one of JJ's songwriters/managers was a singer of "Who the hell is Edgar?", that song deserved a lot more points two years ago.

Toonami delivered for me tonight, showing a first piece of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. I'd wanted to see it! Of course, it's been years since I last read the manga and many more years than that since I last saw the anime, so I'm struggling to remember all the characters, especially the Soul Reapers.
Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga also started, though I'm confused since it seems like more things have happened in between this and the last episode of the anime Toonami played?

My last music post had me thinking about Ministry, so I ended up cuing up their "Jesus Built My Hot Rod" and "N.W.O." on YouTube. (From their ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ (Psalm 69) album.) It really shows that I don't listen to as much heavy music as I used to, because it was a bit too heavy for me. In the '90s, things like this routinely played on the radio and MTV.
Maybe I need to rebuild my tolerance.
("Jesus Built My Hot Rod" is kind of the industrial metal equivalent of "Surfin' Bird," and it's kind of what cocaine would sound like, so there are other obstacles to entry there.)

It's a thing in my life that trying mail always arrives Friday evening or Saturday, when I can't call anyone to ask for help. Today there arrived a very generic envelope with no identification that looked like junk mail. I only opened it because I was curious. It turns out it's from GEICO demanding I see one of their own doctors on June 2 at 2 pm and have all of my scans and medical records relating to what's been going on with my no-fault injury and treatment. Does that include the actual MRI from the ER and not just the report? I dunno. I'm going to have to talk to all my doctors and such when they have business hours again.
Then there's always the worry of being a disabled person going to a doctor who has no idea of my physical history but will be judging me. A doctor who is, in some ways, hostile to my best interests.
Seriously, look at this thing:

I had no reason to think this was GEICO making me a doctor appointment I can't refuse.

lotro, first you debacle your 64-bit transfer by freaking out a bunch of rpers and housing enthusiasts with the fear that they're going to be losing names and housing and massively underestimate how effective that would be and then you wanna nerf my burg when you haven't even un-nerfed them since the last time? and this is after the LI track grind tires me out so much I don't even want to do normal questing after I drag my way through it. do you, like, hate me actually wanting to play or something? (Honestly I might end up ditching him and he's been my main since...I don't even remember when I started but it's been over 10 years and probably 15.)

Adding in some gratitude with my fangirling
May. 17th, 2025 07:13 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
This post will add some gratitude in with my fangirling.
First, gratitude:
- Someone posted that the food pantry at the community college really really needed donations, and they'd pick it up. I put a box together. They messaged me the next day to say the items were PERFECT for the pantry. So Doris made a Costco run and bought more of the same so we can donate again.
- Doris is closing one of her offices at the end of this month. It's a good thing - it will reduce her expenses and give her more time with her parents
- Going to a protest tomorrow!
- (Edited to add)...Kinda fandom related but I'll put it here since I did something hard. With Doris working today (Saturday) I had pretty much the whole day open. I wanted to go to this place in Chicago that sells all sorts of drag queen-ish gifts, to see if they had something I wanted to gift my queens. But getting there and back is a pain in the ass. On public transit, it's minimum 90 minutes one way. Street parking in the neighborhood is really tough, so I went the Spot Hero route. I knew I ran the risk of the parking garage also having issues....SO many Chicago parking garages have tiny spots flanked by huge concrete polls, and can be very hard to get in and out of the spots. But I did it. The spot was challenging, but I successfully got in and out. I visited the Chicago Diner (veg restaurant right near the gift place) too. Didn't find anything great at the gift place, but I did walk out with a few options. Mostly I'm happy that I got my damn car in and out of the parking spot!
Fan stuff:
Being a fan of these two is crazy. In just one day - yesterday - here's the content we got:
- new vlog from Kori
- sneak peak of Lydia in All Stars
- An IG live, where they shoutouted out to the IG page I help run and looked like they wanted to makeout in the backseat of the Uber.
And - goddess willing - I will get to meet them and see them perform on Thursday!! I am still doing "ok" mentally...definitely very into them but not totally obsessed. So that's good.
(EDIT - More Dreamwidth font wtf)
